The IRU provides the capability for mass-decontamination at the scene of a chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear incident. Each IRU carries two decon units that are capable of treating up to 200 people per hour. Additional equipment carried includes disrobe and re-robe packs, pumps, water heaters, lights, hoses, gas-tight suits and detection and monitoring equipment such as radiation dosimeters and survey meters. Consumable materials such as detergents, disrobe packs and re-robe packs will be replenished by disrobe and re-robe modules. Essex County Fire and Rescue Service does not have the MDD disrobe and MDR rerobe pods. Neighbouring services in Cambridgeshire, London and Suffolk can provide these facilities.
